Societal Texture
“The difference between technology and slavery is that slaves are fully aware that they are not free”. Nassim Nicholas Taleb This art series delves into the complex interplay between modernity, consumerism, and globalization in contemporary society. It employs packaging cartons sourced from local marketplaces as the building blocks of a visual narrative. These cartons, dissected and reassembled, serve as a symbolic representation of the very DNA of consumerism, forming the foundation of my artistic compositions. As an individual of African descent who has migrated to one of Europe's largest urban centers, Berlin, I have had the opportunity to witness firsthand the stark disparities in consumerist cultures when juxtaposed with my hometown of Addis Ababa. |
